According to the book Persepolis, the writer, Marjane Satrapi worked really hard
to show the audience the true history of Iran. Iran at that time, and even now,
was a closed country, Satrapi, as a little girl that time had experienced this
and she wanted to show people the truth.
In the book, she talked about the Iran-Iraq war,
the demonstrations, the fell of the Shan, and many small events that happened
to show the daily life of Iranian that time. She loved that country, but Iran
wasn’t as great as what she thought before. She wanted to change but it’s too
difficult for her to achieve. So, she wrote this book, wanted more people to notice
the truth and whished people who are powerful enough can help Iran to change.
From the scenes in the book, Marjane’s mother
once went out with out veil, and then she was threatened by two men who wanted
to throw her into trash. This showed women in Iran were not free and the
country was violent. Once the new Islamic government had replaced the old
empire, most people from the prison had been released. However, they were still
killed by the government by many strange reasons, such as being spy or did
something that’s bad to the country. Actually, the truth was just they were
communist and it was possible for some of them to replace the political system
again. This showed that there’s no big difference between the old and new
government and nothing changed, so the country was still not good for their
people. Satrapi did reflect things happened in Iran in a way that’s not that
heartbreak.
Even though Satrapi could not go back to Iran
again, she did the right thing to tell the truth. It made people know many
parts of the story. As a result, I think she achieve her purpose. Satrapi made
people to understand the history by reading an interesting story. It’s
attracted enough for audience who read this book couldn’t put it down. So, she
successfully made more people care about Iran and Iranian’s daily life.
For me, after reading the book, and during
reading the book, I started to find information about Iran. I didn’t like
history for many years but I just want to understand Marjane’s feeling. Later
then, I search information from the Internet, I asked my friends, and I asked
my dad to know the history of Iran. Even for me, the person that didn’t like history
a lot could go to find the truth of history, for others, it would work better.
Admittedly, Satrapi use the book in the
perspective of a little girl, Marjane, in the form of comic to show the events
happened in Iran during all of the revolution. She did what she wanted to do by
writing Persepolis. She was so brave and she truly became the honest and
thoughtful woman as her parents, her uncle Anoosh and herself wished so. And in
my perspective, I also wish Iran would be a better country as Satrapi wish so.
